Box Score LARAMIE, Wyo. – The No. 25/25 Gonzaga women's basketball team cruised to an 89-50 victory over Wyoming Tuesday evening at the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo.
Gonzaga (2-2) finished with three players in double-figures, led by
Jenn Wirth with her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Wirth added three assists in the win.
Cierra Walker added 12 points—including nine in the second half off a perfect 3-of-3 from long range—while
LeeAnne Wirth chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
The Bulldogs dominated the glass, hauling in 44 boards to Wyoming's 19, and controlled the paint with a 38-22 advantage inside. And for the third time this season, GU dished out at least 20 assists, finishing with 21 on the night.
"Our last three games have been kind of close and stressful, so I think to come out and play and shoot like we did today it's just a big confidence boost,"
Jenn Wirth said. "It kind of allows us to see what we're really capable of."
Wyoming (1-1) opened the scoring with a trey, first of four for the Cowgirls in the first quarter, but a jumper from
Jill Townsend followed by a layup from
Jenn Wirth gave the Zags the advantage. The first quarter featured nine lead changes and three ties, and the Cowgirls led 18-16 with 1:27 to go. Back-to-back layups by
Jenn Wirth to close the quarter put the Zags on top by two (20-18) to begin the second.
The Zags continued the run well into the second quarter, with 10 unanswered points to open the stanza. Gonzaga was tough to contain in the second as it shot 75 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from three. Seven Zags scored in the quarter, led by six points from
Jenn Wirth on a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor. A short 8-4 run by Wyoming to close the quarter cut GU's lead to 12, 42-30.
Gonzaga continued to pull away from the Cowgirls in the second half with stellar defense and solid shooting. The Bulldogs held Wyoming to 28.0 percent shooting in the second half, limiting the Cowgirls to 10 points in both the third and fourth quarters. Ten different Bulldogs scored in the half, and the Zags were superb from long range, connecting on 8-of-13 attempts to shoot 61.5 percent. GU cruised to the 89-50 win, it's largest victory since an 84-44 victory over Eastern Washington on Nov. 22, 2019.
"Tonight was a great team win," Head Coach
Lisa Fortier said. "We were very efficient offensively, and we worked really well together for a good mix of interior and perimeter baskets. We needed a bounce-back game today, and we got it. I'm really happy for the team."
Wyoming did not have a single player in double figures. The Cowgirls were led by Quinn Weidemann with eight points while Alba Sanchez Ramos and McKinley Bradshaw added seven points apiece.
