Baseball Downed by Oregon State, 5-1

GU wraps tournament Monday vs. New Mexico

Box Score SURPRISE, Ariz. – Gonzaga baseball managed just one run against No. 25 Oregon State on Sunday in a 5-1 loss at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball in Surprise, Ariz.

Gonzaga (1-2) scored first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Beavers (2-1) quickly answered and tacked on some insurance runs in the seventh and eighth. Jack Machtolf had two of Gonzaga's five hits in the game.

"This one was a tough battle that didn't go our way," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "I thought Nick [Trogrlic-Iverson] gave us a good start. Their two arms were a good challenge and learning from games like that should make us tougher to beat going forward."

On the mound, Nick Trogrlic-Iverson got the start, going 4.0 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. After Mason Wells got an out in relief, three Zags made their college debuts: Jacob Rutherford, Ben Larson and Trystan Vrieling. The trio was solid in the final 3.2 innings, allowing a combined four hits and three runs with four strikeouts and three walks.

In the third, Gonzaga got on the board first for the second straight day against the Beavers, taking a 1-0 lead on a deep sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Rando. OSU was fortunate to get out of the inning with just the one run as GU had the bases loaded with one out.

Oregon State answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third, notching three hits in the inning to take back the lead.

The GU bullpen entered in the fifth and got outs from Wells and Rutherford to get through the inning. Redshirt freshman Ben Larson entered in the sixth with a runner aboard and struck out a pair to get out of the inning.

Vrieling came on for the final 1.2 innings, allowing just a run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Gonzaga will wrap up the tournament in Surprise, Ariz., on Monday morning with a 9 a.m. PT/10 a.m. MT tilt against New Mexico. Links to live coverage are available at GoZags.com.
