EAST LANSING, Mich. – Gonzaga women's tennis battled Xavier right down to the wire and came out victorious in a 4-3 win over the Musketeers on Sunday in a neutral site match in East Lansing, Mich.
After the doubles point came down to the third match, five of six singles matches went three sets, leaving the result anyone's for the taking. Gonzaga (4-5) found itself down a point after doubles, but quickly rallied to take the lead in singles before freshman
Cate Broerman finished a third-set tiebreak to defeat Xavier (4-6).
"It was an incredible gritty win today," assistant coach
Natalie Pluskota-Hamberg said. "Xavier did a great job competing and challenging us emotionally and physically. It was awesome to see our ladies bounce back from a tough match yesterday. Overall, I am really pleased with how we dug in and competed today."
Freshman
Jenna Sloan earned the only straight-set win of the day in singles, taking down her opponent 6-2, 6-4 to tie it 1-1.
GU then got three-set wins by
Haruna Tsuruta and
Taylor Gruber to tie the score at 3-3. Tsuruta dropped her first set, but came back from the 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. Gruber opened with a win in the first set and then took home the third in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Broerman then held off Xavier's Anna Roggenburk in a third-set tiebreak. The Zag won the first set 6-3, but dropped the second 6-4. Then with other matches finished, it came down to a tiebreak with the third set tied at 6-6. Broerman earned the 7-5 win in the tiebreak to clinch the victory.
Gonzaga is back at home on Saturday, Feb. 22 for a pair of matches. GU will face Fresno State at 1 p.m. and Seattle U at 7 p.m. with live coverage on GoZags.com.
