SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga women's tennis cruised to a pair of victories on Saturday with a 4-2 win over Fresno State and a 4-0 sweep of Seattle U at the Stevens Center.
GU (6-5) battled Fresno State (6-5) with a pair of three-set wins on the way to the victory to start the day before dominating Seattle (4-7) in the night cap without dropping a set.
"I was so impressed with the team today," head coach
D.J. Gurule said. "From start to finish we were focused and determined to stay in the moment. It is a tough schedule for the ladies, but they definitely rose to the occasion."
Against Fresno State, GU took home the doubles point with a clinching win on No. 1 by
Kate Ketels and
Vlada Medvedcova, 6-4. A 6-3 victory by
Taylor Gruber and
Jenna Sloan came on No. 3 in the first match to finish.
Then in singles, FSU took GU to the wire in three matches, but the Zags came out in front on Nos. 1 and 2.
Haruna Tsuruta won in straight sets for GU's second point, and then
Cate Broerman made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 victory on No. 2.
Fresno answered with a three-set win on No. 6 and another victory on No. 5 to make it 3-2 and put the pressure on GU. The Zags then turned to their senior leader on No. 1 in Ketels. She came back from down a set to take the clinching victory, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
In the late match, GU won 6-1 on No. 2 doubles with Broerman and Tsuruta, then clinched the point with Sloan and Gruber on No. 3 6-3.
In singles, it was even more dominant with Tsuruta taking a 6-0, 6-0 win and Medvedcova taking a 6-1, 6-1 win to set up the clinching point. Freshman
Maria Frampton then finished it off with a 7-5, 6-1 victory on No. 6.
