Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Gonzaga baseball battled all game long, but fell short in a 9-5 loss on Sunday to wrap the series at No. 7 Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Gonzaga (2-6) scored in three consecutive innings from the fifth to the seventh, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Razorbacks (7-0). GU had 11 hits in the game, including five different players with two hits each, while Arkansas had 14 total hits.
"This series was not the outcomes we were looking for, and we just weren't able to play a complete game in all three areas," head coach
Mark Machtolf said. "We are definitely disappointed, but we believe playing a team of this caliber is going to make us better moving forward."
Catcher
Tyler Rando added three RBIs with his two hits in the game, while
Ernie Yake also had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
Jack Machtolf and
Mason Marenco each scored once on two hits, while
Brett Harris had a pair of hits of his own.
Arkansas built a 5-0 lead through four innings off of GU starter
Nick Trogrlic-Iverson and reliever
William Kempner, but Gonzaga answered with three runs of its own in the top of the fifth. Machtolf singled and Marenco walked to open the inning, followed by a one-out RBI double from Yake and a two-out, two-RBI single from Rando to make it 5-3.
As would become the theme, the Razorbacks answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run. GU matched that run in its next at-bat when
Gabriel Hughes scampered home on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.
Arkansas got three more in the bottom of the sixth before GU added its final run of the day on a sacrifice fly from Rando in the seventh.
Trystan Vrieling and Hughes kept the Razorbacks off the board for the final 2.1 innings, but the GU offense was unable to come up with a late rally.
Gonzaga will be back on the road for a three-game series at South Alabama on Feb. 28-March 1 in Mobile, Ala. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.
