SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's basketball team was named the NCAA Statistical Champion in three categories, the NCAA Media Coordination and Statistics Staff released Wednesday. The Zags led the country in scoring offense, scoring margin and winning percentage in 2019-20.
Gonzaga will receive plaques for its trophy case to recognize the honors. The Bulldogs finished the 2019-20 season with a 31-2 record, a winning percentage of 93.9. For the second straight season, GU paced the country in scoring offense and scoring margin. This past season, the Zags averaged 87.4 points per game, and won their games by an average of 19.6 points.
It's the sixth, seventh and eighth categories that Gonzaga was named the statistical champion over the past four seasons. Last season, the Bulldogs led the nation winning games by an average of 22.8 points (program record), while scoring 87.6 points per outing (program record). They also made a national best 52.6 percent of their shots from the field (program record). In 2016-17, GU led the nation with a 94.9-win percentage (program record), advancing to the national championship with a 37-2 record. That Zag squad also topped the country with a 21.1 scoring margin.
Gonzaga was second in the country this past season in field goal percentage (51.5), fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.49) and rebound margin (9.2), and fifth in total assists (550) and free throw attempts (789). In 2018-19, the Bulldogs were second in winning percentage (89.2), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.70), third in assists (668), fourth in assists per game (18.1), blocks per game (5.5) and total blocks (204).
Brandon Clarke led the nation in total blocks in 2018-19, shattering the program record with 117. He also topped the country making 68.7 percent of his shots from the field, which was also a new GU record.
The 2017-18 Zags were third in the nation in win percentage (86.5), scoring margin (15.8) and total rebounds (1,475). In 2016-17, Gonzaga was second in total rebounds (1,587) (program record), defensive rebounds per game (31.0), field goal percentage defense (36.5) (program record), and three-point field goal percentage defense (29.0), and fourth in in field goal percentage (50.4).
Gonzaga currently boasts the country's longest home win streak at 39 games. GU is the only program in the country to have reached 30 wins in each of the past four seasons. The Zags extended their current nationally-best active streak of regular season titles, owned or shared, to eight in 2019-20. Gonzaga won its 18
th West Coast Conference Tournament title to close the season, after appearing in its 23rd straight WCC Tournament Championship game. The 23 consecutive tournament final appearances is the longest streak of its kind in the nation.
