Zags Score Twice in Final Five Minutes for 3-2 Win

Gonzaga records thrilling comeback victory at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Gonzaga women's soccer team rallied in the final minutes for a 3-2 win at Portland Wednesday.

The Zags (11-2-0, 1-1-0 West Coast Conference) trailed 2-1 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, before Erin Healy and Maddie Kemp both found the back of the net to secure the thrilling victory.

The outcome puts Gonzaga one win shy of matching the program record for most victories in a single season. The Bulldogs equaled the record for most goals in a season at 39 with the three goals at Portland. GU did break the most points in a single season, recording eight in the win, for a total of 110 this season. The previous record of 108 was set in 2017.

Gonzaga outshot the Pilots 18-7, with a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs took 12 of the match's 13 corner kicks. GU controlled 59 percent of the possession in the game.

Portland (4-6-0, 0-2-0 WCC) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Taryn Ries found the back of the net for the third time this season. GU's Jordan Thompson scored the equalizer in the 30th minute. The senior capitalized on a penalty kick for her third goal of the season.

In the 62nd minute, Nedya Sawan scored her team-high fifth goal of the season. Her third game-winning goal of the year came off an assist from Emily Collier, who recorded her first point of the season on the play.

Healy headed in a cross from Lauren Elwer in the 86th minute to tie the match at two. Healy's fourth goal of the season came on Elwer's fourth assist of the season. A little over a minute later, Healy recorded her second assist of the season on a goal from Maddie Kemp. Kemp's ninth goal of the season, second game-winner, was lofted shot over the outstretched hands of the Portland keeper.

Kemp finished the match with five shots. She now has 65 shots this season, which is tied for third-most all-time at Gonzaga. Bre Norris made five saves in the Pilots' net, while Lyza Bosselmann had one for GU.

Gonzaga hosts defending national champion Santa Clara (5-4-2, 2-0-0) Saturday at 4 p.m. The Broncos won at Pacific Thursday, 3-1. Saturday's match will have live video and stats on GoZags.com.
