LOS ANGELES – Gonzaga's
Corey Kispert,
Jalen Suggs and
Drew Timme were named to the John R. Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 list, announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, Monday. The award is presented to the nation's most outstanding basketball player.
Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts, the late season list is comprised of 20 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport's most prestigious honor, based on their performances during the first half of the 2021-21 season.
Kispert leads the West Coast Conference in scoring at 20.2 points per game. He is shooting a phenomenal 57.7 percent from the field, which is second in the conference. The senior tops the league making 3.1 three-pointers per game at a WCC-best 48.6 percentage (sixth in the nation). He is third in the conference shooting 67.3 percent inside-the-arc. Kispert is second in the WCC with a 90.0 free-throw percentage. He has scored in double-digits in all but one game this season, reaching 20 points eight times. The Edmonds, Wash., native, boasts a 112-10 career record in games he's appeared in. He's scored 1,335 points in career, and is seventh in GU history with 232 three-pointers.
Suggs leads the West Coast Conference in steals per game at 2.27. He was fifth dishing out 4.53 assists per outing. The West Saint Paul, Minn., native, is sixth in the league shooting 51.4 percent from the field, averaging 13.47 points per game. He's been named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Week six times this season. Suggs was named the league's Player of the Week after scoring a season-high 27 points in a win over then-ranked No. 3 Iowa. The West Saint Paul, Minn., native, has scored in double digits nine times and dished out at least five assists in five games.
Timme is second in the conference averaging 18.7 points per game and fifth grabbing 6.88 rebounds per outing. He leads the league shooting 62 percent from the field, and is fourth inside-the-arc at 62.8 percent. He has started all 17 games for GU, scoring in double digits 16 times. Timme has seven 20-point games this season, including a career-high 29 versus Virginia.
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2021 John R. Wooden Award Men's Player of the Year presented by Wendy's. Players not chosen to the late season list are still eligible for the Wooden Award National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award.
Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament in April.
