Gonzaga Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Eastern Washington

Zags get a pair of goals in first half in home debut

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga Women's Soccer team beat Eastern Washington 2-0 in their home debut for the season Tuesday.

On a rainy, chilly afternoon, the Zags' (2-1) first goal came just 10 minutes into the contest by Lauren Elwer, her first goal of the season, and was assisted by Kate Doyle. Ten minutes later, in the 20th minute, Maggie Conners assisted Hannah Hale to give her the second goal of the game, and of the season.

The Bulldogs were impressive on the defensive end, limiting EWU (0-2) to seven shots, with just two on frame. GU took 19 shots, placing nine on goal. Three of Erin Healy's game-high five shots were on goal for the Bulldogs. Elwer, Doyle and Maddie Cooley all took three shots.

Gonzaga had a 53 percent edge in possession, being on the Eagles' side of the field 61 percent of the time. The Zags also had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Eastern Washington goalkeeper Kelsee Winston had seven saves, while Lyza Bosselmann had two for GU.

The Bulldogs remain at home for the next scheduled game against Pacific Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will have live stats from Mulligan Field on GoZags.com.

Gonzaga Head Coach Chris Watkins

"I was really happy with a lot that we did out there today. I thought we looked smart and purposeful all over the field.

"Eastern fought us all over the field. I thought they battled well. We are grateful that Eastern could come over and we could get this game in considering everything."
