SPOKANE, Wash.- The Gonzaga men's soccer team won their home opener in thrilling fashion, 1-0, over Northwest Nazarene Tuesday.
After a scoreless first 88 minutes, Sebastian Karlhom found the back of the net in the 89th minute to give GU (1-3) its first win of the season. Demitrius Kigeya was credited with the assist.
It was Karlhom's first goal of the season, and Kigeya now has three points on the season.
The Zags outshot NNU, 13-6, with a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams had three shots in the first 45 minutes. Gonzaga took 11 corner kicks, to just one for the Nighthawks (1-1). The Bulldogs controlled the possession, holding the ball for 59 percent of the time.
Sawyer Price made five saves for Northwest Nazarene. GU split the game between two goalkeepers, both playing for a period. Finn Simmersbach played the first 45 minutes, and had one save, while Johan Garibay played the second half and had one save.
The Zags' next schedule contest is the West Coast Conference opener against San Francisco on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available from Mulligan Field.
