Men’s Soccer Falls in Season Opener

Seattle escapes with goal in 107th minute

SEATTLE – Seattle defeated the Gonzaga Men's soccer team, 3-2, in a thrilling match that went into two extra periods Wednesday. Seattle scored the game winner in the 107th minute. It was a season-opener for both programs.
 
The Bulldogs took a lead early in the game, with Demitrius Kigeya scoring just three minutes into the first half. Frankie Ljucovic assisted on the Zags' first goal of the season.
 
In the 21st minute, Seattle's (1-0) Jesse Ortiz tied the game at one. Ortiz struck again in the 51st minute, this time with an assist from Noe Meza. In the closing minutes, Cole Rovegno, assisted by Wylie Trujillo, scored the equalizer for the Bulldogs (0-1) on an impressive strike in the 82nd minute.
 
The Zags went into the first overtime energized from Rovegno's goal and were able to obtain three corner kicks and the only shot of the period by Rovegno. A minute into the second extra period, Trujillo attempted a shot for the Bulldogs. But, five minutes later, the Redhawks' Rory King found Munier Hussen for the game-winning goal.
 
Seattle had 23-14 edge in shots, but the Bulldogs placed nine shots on goal, compared to the Redhawks' eight. GU had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks as well. Zags' goalkeeper Johan Garibay made five saves, while Seattle's Akili Kasim had seven.
