SEATTLE – Gonzaga men's soccer couldn't overcome Washington's offensive firepower in the first half en route to a 3-0 road loss to the Huskies on Sunday afternoon.
Early scores by Washington's (2-0-0, 0-0-0) Lucas Meek and Dylan Teves put the Bulldogs (0-2-0, 0-0-0) down 0-2 less than 20 minutes into the game. Another score from Meek put the Huskies ahead 3-0 at the 25-minute mark.
The Huskies would go scoreless in the second half after a renewed Zags defensive effort that allowed only 3 shots in that span, but they had already gotten the offense they needed. In 90 minutes, UW outshot GU 15-5, including 11-1 on shots on goal, and GU goalkeeper Johan Garibay finished with 8 saves in the losing effort.
The Zags won the possession battle, holding the ball for 53% of the game to UW's 47%. Senior defender Cole Rovegno finished with a team-high two shots with one on goal, followed by three Zags with a shot apiece -- preseason all-conference striker Demitrius Kigeya and midfielders Frankie Ljucovic and Richard Ruiz.
The Zags now turn their attention to another Pac-12 foe in Oregon State, who they'll face Feb. 13 in Corvallis, Oregon. The matchup with the Beavers will be the final nonconference game before GU heads into WCC play.
