PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team battled Drexel and St. Joe's on the historic Schuylkill River Saturday morning in Philadelphia, Pa., in its first event since the fall of 2019. The Zags challenged the Dragons and Hawks in both the V8 and JV8 races.
"It was great to get back to racing again after a year off," Head Coach
Dan Gehn said. "This is a young team with not a lot of water time because of a three-week pause. It was a really good experience for them, and we look to settle in to racing in the coming weeks."
Gonzaga's JV8 opened the day for the Bulldogs against Drexel's JV8 and 3V8 boats. The Dragons' 3V8 won the heat with a time of 5:59.48 with Drexel's JV8 finishing second in 6:04.56. The Bulldogs crossed in 6:23.91.
In the V8, the Zags took second behind Drexel, finishing in a time of 6:05.15, just over 10 seconds behind the Dragons' time of 5:54.19.
Against St. Joe's in the afternoon, the Zags' JV8 timed a 6:35.92, about 14 seconds behind the Hawks' winning time of 6:21.09. In the V8, St. Joe's bested GU by just over nine seconds, finishing in 6:05.00 to GU's 6:14.64.
The Zags return home to host Oregon State Saturday, April 17 at 9 a.m. at the Johnson Family Boathouse on Silver Lake.
