WROW: Zags Shine in First Official Race at the Johnson Family Boathouse

Zags sweep V8, V4 and 2V8 races

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team swept all three races Sunday morning against visiting Portland, Seattle and Pacific Lutheran in its first official race at the Johnson Family Boathouse on Silver Lake in Medical Lake, Wash. Sunday's event was rescheduled from the originally scheduled Saturday, April 10th date due to high winds.

With clear conditions with little to no wind, the Bulldogs' varsity 4 and second varsity 4 opened the morning with a lopsided victory over the Pilots. GU's varsity 4 took control early and led by a full boat length midway through the 2,000-meter course. The Zags' V4 finished in 7:45.23, just over nine seconds ahead of GU's 2V4 at 7:53.45 while the Pilots crossed in 8:31.85.

In the second varsity 8, the second race of the morning, Gonzaga once again took control early, building a sizeable lead with 1,000 meters to go and extending it with 500 remaining. GU crossed in 7:05.80, more than 25 seconds ahead of Portland's second-place time of 7:31.97. The Zags were just as dominant in the varsity 8, winning with a time of 6:52.70, about 17 second ahead of the Pilot's second-place finish.

"First, thank you to the visiting teams for such a great display of pivoting from the plan and working together to make for a great race experience," Head Coach Andrew Derrick said. "The wind yesterday would have made racing a challenge to say the least. Today however was amazing. The water, conditions, and racing were great! I was really proud of our team for handling several challenging circumstances this week and showing up ready to go. We were sad to not have our full squad racing at home, but those that did, represented all members of our program really well!"

Gonzaga returns to the water Saturday, April 24 at the Oregon State Invitational, hosted by Oregon State on Dexter Lake in Corvallis, Ore. Pac-12 programs USC and Washington will be in attendance. Check GoZags.com for up-to-date race time information.
