CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team battled multiple Pac-12 teams in the Dexter Lake Invitational Saturday morning at the Dexter Reservoir outside of Corvallis, Ore.
Saturday's racing conditions featured flat water with a 1-3 mile per hour light tailwind on the 2000-meter course. Gonzaga battled reigning national champion Washington along with Oregon State, USC and Sacramento State in Saturday's regatta.
The Zags fours shined in Saturday's regatta as the Varsity 4 took fourth and the 2V4-A's also secured a fourth-place finished out of six boats. The V4 finished in a time of 7:41.61, exactly four seconds back from USC's V4 time of 7:37.91. Washington won the race in 7:04.45.
In the 2V4's, GU's 'A' boat finished in 7:49.53 to take fourth of six teams, edging out Oregon State's 2V4 'B' boat by more than 20 seconds.
Washington took the top time in the varsity 8, finishing in 6:17.36. Gonzaga finished just over two seconds behind Sacramento State in fifth with a time of 6:45.43.
"We made some progress in our boats in terms of putting together more complete races, although the results were not what we had hoped for," Head Coach Andy Derrick said. "Ultimately, this was race was preparation for WCCs, so if we are better going into that, today was a success, but we won't know for three more weeks. Either way, we have some work and sorting still to do. Above all, we need three consistent weeks of healthy training leading up to WCCs to get to where we need to be in-terms of speed."
The Bulldogs return to the water Saturday, May 15 in the West Coast Conference Championships. The location and start time of the regatta is yet to be determined; check GoZags.com for up-to-date racing information.
