SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga baseball team completed the series sweep against Pacific with a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field. It was the second series sweep of the season for the Zags after a 3-0 series win over Santa Clara two weeks prior.
Gonzaga (16-10, 7-2) opened Saturday's game with a single run in the first frame.
Ernie Yake reached on a single to right field, while
Guthrie Morrison and
Brett Harris both flied out, yielding two outs for Pacific (7-17, 0-9 WCC).
Tyler Rando stepped up to the plate for the Zags and connected on a double to right field, bringing Yake home for the first score of the game.
In the top of the second, Pacific loaded the bases off a hit-by-pitch, walk and a single to center. With runners in scoring position, James Arakawa's sacrifice fly sent Thomas Gavello home to even the score 1-1. It was not until the bottom of the eighth that the Zags secured the winning run.
Harris reached after being hit by pitch while Rando walked. Gonzaga loaded the bases after
Andrew Orzel was also hit by a pitch. DH
Stephen Lund delivered the sacrifice fly to send Harris home for what would be the winning run. The Zags defense made quick work of the Tigers, ending the frame with a double-play to secure the 2-1 win and series sweep.
Michael Spellacy got the win for GU in 3.1 innings of work.
"Excited for our guys to finish off the weekend with a sweep," Head Coach
Mark Machtolf said. "Another strong pitching performance today, highlighted by Spellacy on the back end. Have a quick rest and ready to get down to Corvallis on Monday."
Next up for the Zags is a non-conference meeting with Oregon State, a two-game series starting Monday, April 5 at 5:35 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field in Corvallis, Ore. Visit GoZags.com for up-to-date game time information including live streaming and live stats.
