PULLMAN, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team had a strong showing in the annual Fawley Cup, hosted by Washington State at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River outside Pullman, Wash.
 
The Zags opened the day with a strong race in the varsity 8, posting a 7:16.89 final time in the 2,000-meter race. Washington State edged the Zags with a final time of 7:09.42 to claim the win. Gonzaga trailed WSU by six seconds in the 2v8, finishing with a 7:31.97 to the Cougars' 7:24.24.
 
Gonzaga snagged its first and only victory of the day in the 3v8, defeating WSU by nearly 17 seconds. The Zags' crew finished in 8:03.78 coxed by freshman Ana Gamboa-Gonzalez while Washington State crossed the finish in 8:20.68 for the Zags' lone victory of the morning.
"It was great to see the 3v's efforts this year reinforced with their bow across the line first, but our squad did a good job of differentiating results vs execution," Head Coach Andrew Derrick said. "Everyone knows we can learn from today and be better next time out."
 
In the varsity 4, Washington State finished in 8:13.04 while Gonzaga crossed in 8:13.04. In the 2v4, the Cougars bested GU by 13 seconds, finishing in 8:13.03 while the Zags finished with a time of 8:27.20.
"I'm proud of the effort from our whole squad especially in more challenging conditions than expected," Derrick said. "There are still things to be worked on, but we are getting closer to putting together more complete races."
 
The Zags return home to host their lone home regatta of the season next Saturday, April 10. Gonzaga welcomes Portland, Seattle and Pacific Lutheran to Silver Lake in the only home race of the 2020-21 campaign.
