SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team battled Washington State and Santa Clara Saturday morning at the Johnson Family Boathouse on Silver Lake. The Zags claimed their fifth-straight Fawley Cup with wins over the Cougars in both races, while the Broncos took the top spot in both the Varsity 8 and JV8 on the 2000-meter course.
"Santa Clara got the best of us in the first 500 in both races," said Head Coach
Dan Gehn. "We rowed well in the middle 1000, but the damage was done early and we were unable to respond to that."
In the Varsity 8, Santa Clara finished with a time of 6:03.56, while Gonzaga was just under five seconds back at 6:08.46. WSU was another 10 seconds back, finishing in 6:18.72. In the JV8, the Broncos took the top time of 6:10.20, with GU in second at 6:15.70. WSU finished third at 6:36.60.
Gonzaga has now won five-straight Fawley Cups against the Cougars and have only surrendered the Fawley Cup four times in its 31-plus year history.
