VANCOUVER, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's rowing team secured its sixth-straight and 19th overall West Coast Conference Championship title Saturday morning on Vancouver Lake outside of Vancouver, Wash., effectively punching its sixth-straight ticket to the NCAAs.
"I could not be prouder of what and how our team has persevered through this year," Head Coach
Andrew Derrick said. "We had lots of ups and downs, but ultimately they found a way to get it done and each person contributed to what turned out to be a great day for the program. We are honored and look forward to representing the WCC at the national championships, but for the rest of the day we are just going to enjoy the moment!"
Finishing with 40 points, the Zags varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four clinched victories to secure GU's seventh-ever trip to the NCAAs.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs' second varsity four opened the day with a massive victory, finishing with a time of 7:56.53 with a 22.20-second margin of victory. USD took second while Creighton took third. The varsity four continued the win streak for GU, completing the course in 7:37.95, 9.51 seconds ahead of LMU's second-place time of 7:47.95.
In the third event of the regatta, USD's 2V8 boat took first in 6:49.64, while Gonzaga's boat finished second 7.13 seconds back with a time of 6:56.77 just ahead of Portland in 6:58.68. Creighton and Saint Mary's took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Gonzaga's varsity eight secured the title with a winning time of 6:36.55, nearly eight seconds ahead of USD's finishing time of 6:44.51. Creighton finished third in 6:48.97, while Loyola Marymount rounded out the top four with a time of 6:55.92.
