SHERWOOD, Ore. – In their last chances to qualify for regionals, the Gonzaga women's and men's track teams had stellar nights at the Portland Distance Carnival. The Bulldogs'
Yacine Guermali set a new men's 1,500-meter program record, and five other Top-10 marks were also set.
Guermali broke Andy Phillips' six-year-old program record, crossing the line at 3:43.59. Phillips' previous best time was 3:43.90, set at the same meet in 2015.
Ben Hogan was close behind Guermali Sunday, finishing in fifth at 3:45.31. Hogan's mark ranks fourth all-time at GU.
In the women's 1,500 meters, the Zags'
Kristen Garcia ran the second-fastest time in program history. She continued her tremendous junior season with a 4:23.65 finish Sunday. She was second in the event.
Claire Gillett (4:36.66) and
Sadie Tuckwood (4:37.16) were eighth and ninth.
Morgan Greene and
Ally Legard ran the fourth and sixth best women's 800-meter times all-time at GU. Greene placed second in the event, while Legard was fourth.
Erin Ripple (2:18.53) and
Emma Flood (2:22.20) were seventh and ninth.
Greene and Ripple were first and second in the 400 meters. Greene crossed the line at 1:00.94, and Ripple's 1:01.75 finish is tied with for 10
th all-time at GU.
Four Zags placed inside the Top-5 in the women's 5,000 meters led by
Alicia Anderson's first place finish. The sophomore had a time of 16:51.34.
Liz Hogan was third at 17:39.72,
Brittney Hansen was fourth at 17:53.39, and
Makenna Edwards finished in fifth at 18:04.82.
In the men's 5,000 meters,
Cullen McEachern (14:26.54) and
Evan Bates (14:49.47) were eighth and ninth.
Jake Perrin capped the night off for Gonzaga with a second-place finish in the 10,000 meters at 30:21.82.
Riley Moore was closed behind in third at 30:41.22, while
Kyle Radosevich was third with a 30:56.96 finish.
Dominic Arce placed fifth at 31:04.82.
The NCAA West Preliminary Round is May 26-29 in College Station, Texas. For each individual event contested at each of the Preliminary Round sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes will be accepted into the competition. Individual event student-athletes and relay teams accepted into the NCAA Preliminary Round of competition will be announced May 20. For those that qualify during preliminary rounds, the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.
At the time of the release,
James Mwaura currently ranks 17
th in the men's 5,000 meters in the highly competitive West Region, and Guermali is 51
st. Garcia is 45
th in the women's 5,000 meters.
Peter Hogan is 32
nd in the men's 10,000 meters. In the men's steeplechase,
Ben Hogan sits in 37
th, while
Alex Walde and McEachern are 58
th and 91
st.
