SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's soccer team opened the season with a 4-0 shutout win over Eastern Washington at Luger Field Thursday.
In front of a large crowd, the Zags (1-0-0) found the back of the net three times in the first 15 minutes, before adding another goal late in the contest. GU controlled the flow of the game, possessing the ball for 61 percent of the match.
Gonzaga outshot EWU 22-7, placing 13 shots on frame to the Eagles' two opportunities.
Kate Doyle,
Maddie Kemp and
Kelsey Oyler all scored a goal and were credited with an assist. Doyle took a game-high seven shots, with four on goal. In her collegiate debut,
Marissa Garcia placed three of her four shots on goal.
In the fourth minute of the 2021 fall season, Doyle and Oyler connected with Kemp for the first goal. Kemp brought in a pass and struck it low past the EWU (0-1-0) keeper. A minute later, Kemp stole the ball from defense and passed it to Doyle it struck it from well outside the 18 into the net. In the 15th minute,
Kacy Johnston's shot was saved by Kelsee Winston, but Garcia was there to score on the rebound.
Oyler capped off the scoring in the 89th minute, with assists to
Lauren Elwer and
Darcy Woodward. Oyler used one touch to bring in a pass from Elwer and strike it to the far post.
Lyza Bosselmann opened the season with the shutout win in the GU net. She made two saves in the victory. Winston saved nine shots for the Eagles.
The Bulldogs meet Georgia for the first time, squaring off against the Southeastern Conference opponent in Athens Sunday. It will be the first trip to the state of Georgia in program history, and only the fifth matchup ever versus an SEC opponent.
Georgia (1-0-0) opened its season with a 7-1 home win over Campbell Thursday. Sunday's Gonzaga and Georgia match will be broadcast on SEC Network Plus. Live stats will be available on GoZags.com.
