STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Gonzaga volleyball battled through two close sets with host Mississippi State in the Zags' second game of the StarkVegas Classic Friday afternoon, falling in three for their first loss of the season.
Junior outside hitter McKenna Marshall was dominant yet again after posting 19 kills in the Zags' first game, leading GU in kills again with nine while connecting on six digs and three blocks. Grace Ehler (nine kills), Cara McKenzie (six kills, four blocks), Juliette Russell (five kills) and Kennedy Croft (five kills, eight digs) comprised the remainder of the GU attack.
As she was in GU's first game, Brynn Chandler was the Zags' primary distributor, assisting on a team-high 24 points while picking up nine digs of her own.
MSU scored three straight in the first set after Russell tied it up at 5-all with a kill, but the Zags rattled off three straight of their own to get back in it and retake the lead. The Zags went on to lead by as much as four after an MSU attack error made it 23-19, but State went on a 7-1 run to close the set 26-24.
Another back-and-forth affair in the second saw 14 ties and six lead changes, with Marshall tying it up at 22-all with a Chandler-assisted kill. But State would close on a tear yet again, scoring three straight to get out of another tight set with a 2-0 lead overall. MSU got out to an early 11-4 lead in the decisive third set and didn't let go, ultimately extending the lead to 11 with a 25-14 win to seal the victory.
