SPOKANE, Wash. -- In the first-ever matchup between the two teams, Gonzaga men's soccer fell 2-1 in overtime against Bowling Green on Sunday (Aug. 29).
In the first half, both teams went scoreless as the Falcons (1-0-1) oushot the Zags 9-1. Redshirt sophomore Johan Garibay collected four saves in the first 45 minutes as freshman Wylie Trujillo had the lone shot for GU (0-2-0) in the half.
The defending Mid-American Conference champions took the first lead of the game in the 48th minute with a goal from Nathan Masters.
Gonzaga responded in the 62nd minute with a goal from junior Demitrius Kigeya, who recorded his second goal in just two games for GU. The Zags kept the pressure on Bowling Green, taking three shots on goal within the last ten minutes of regulation.
Going into OT, Gonzaga tallied eight shots with five of them being on goal as the Falcons collected 16 shots and eight on goal.
In the 93rd minute, Alberto Anaya scored the game-winning goal for Bowling Green before the Zags could get a shot attempt in overtime.
Attendance Record
Luger Field saw an impressive crowd of 1,300 fans in attendance for tonight's game. It is the largest crowd in history for men's soccer since a 2018 game versus Washington, when the crowd was 1,840 fans.
