Women’s Soccer Wins Fourth Straight Beating Cal Poly, 2-1

Zags off to best start in program history after seven matches

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Jordan Thompson scored the winning goal in the 85th minute in Gonzaga women's soccer's 2-1 victory at Cal Poly Friday.
 
The win gives the Zags (6-1-0) their first best start in program history after seven matches. In its fourth straight victory, GU allowed only its third goal of the season. The Bulldogs have scored a West Coast Conference best 24 goals, to a league low three goals. Gonzaga entered the game ranked eighth in the nation in goal scored.
 
Gonzaga also leads the WCC averaging 21.3 shots per outing, which ranks ninth in the country. The Zags outshot Cal Poly, 18-12, and had an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal. GU owned 51 percent of the possession.
 
After a scoreless first 35 minutes, Camille Lafaix scored her first goal of the season for the Mustangs (3-4-0). Cal Poly's Kylie Rojas shot was blocked by a GU defender, Lafaix then struck a shot that bounced off the crossbar and Lyza Bosselmann's gloves and went into the net. The goal snapped a streak of 326 minutes that Gonzaga didn't allow an opponent to score.
 
After trailing at halftime for the first time this season, the Zags' found the equalizer in the 57th minute. Maddie Kemp scored her WCC-leading sixth goal of the season off a header on a cross from Willow Collins. It was Collins third assist of the season.
 
With only five minutes remaining in regulation, Thompson scored her second goal of the season off a free kick. Marissa Garcia was credited with her second assist of the season.
 
Ava Dorvillier made nine saves for Cal Poly, while Bosselmann had one save for GU. The Bulldogs outshot the Mustangs in the second half, 10-2. Gonzaga ended the match with seven corner kicks to Cal Poly's one.
 
The Zags are at CSU Bakersfield Sunday. After opening the season with a tie, the Roadrunners (0-5-1) have lost five straight, including a 2-0 setback at Saint Mary's Friday. Sunday's match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on GoZags.com.
