SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's soccer team dropped a close contest to California State University Bakersfield, 2-1.
The loss marks the first one since Aug. 29 as the Bulldogs (4-3-0) had an impressive four-game winning streak.
In the first half, neither team found the back of the net as defense was a huge presence on the field. Gonzaga was outshot 8-5, and redshirt sophomore
Johan Garibay recorded three saves in the first 45 minutes.
In the 57th minute, CSUB (1-5-1) got on the board first with a goal from Harry Downing. The score was assisted by Niklas Roessler, who passed the ball to Downing from inside the box.
Down 1-0, the Bulldogs kept the pressure on with shots from senior
Theo O'Malley in the 62nd minute and another in the 64th minute. Freshman
Wylie Trujillo recorded a shot on goal that went just right of the net in the 67th minute.
In the 77th minute, the Bulldogs responded with a goal from freshman
Logan Dorsey, assisted by freshman
Milo Libby. The score came from a corner kick into the box, where Libby headed it into the air to give Dorsey the opportunity to sneak it past the goalkeeper.
The Roadrunners scored the winning goal late in the half during the 86th minute as Aodan O'Hara intercepted a ball and kicked it past Garibay.
Gonzaga outshot CSUB 15-14 with four of those being on goal. Garibay also collected five saves on the night, adding to his 26 total on the season.
