SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In the second road game for the Zags, the men's soccer team defeated Sacramento State, 1-0, to improve to 2-2-0 on the season.
The victory marks the second shutout in-a-row for the Bulldogs and goalkeeper redshirt sophomore
Johan Garibay.
"This team is growing by the week," head coach
Aaron Lewis said. "I am very proud of their continued buy-in over the first few games until our breakthrough came. Now they are displaying a consistent ability to do what it takes to win. It's a process all good teams go through and our process right now is fast on track."
In the first half, freshman
Angelo Calfo scored in the 30th minute with assists from senior
Noah Bushey and junior
Frankie Ljucovic.
The goal came after the Zags drew a free kick from beyond the box. Bushey kicked it into Ljucovic, who quickly passed to Calfo, as he found the back of the net to give GU the lead.
After 45 minutes of play, the Bulldogs record seven shots and Garibay collected three saves.
Gonzaga had another close attempt in the 85th minute with a header from Ljucovic, which narrowly missed the net.
Overall, GU had 13 shots with seven of those on goal and had possession for 53 percent of the game. Freshman
Logan Dorsey led the team with four shots, with three on goal. Ljucovic was right behind him with three shots and one on goal.
Garibay also ended the game with three saves overall as GU didn't allow any shots on goal in the second half.
SERIES HISTORY
The Bulldogs move to 2-1 all time against the Hornets with both wins coming from on the road.
