USD scored the game winning goal in the 87th minute

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's soccer team opened West Coast Conference competition tonight and fell just short of the University of San Diego, 1-0.

The first half was very close as neither team was able to score in the opening 45 minutes.

Gonzaga's goalkeeper Johan Garibay made two critical saves in the opening half during the second minute and 11th minute. Frankie Ljucovic recorded a shot on goal in the 31st minute but USD's goalkeeper made the save to keep it even at 0-0.

The game remained tied until the 87th minute with San Diego's Trevor Dillon scoring off a blocked shot. The score came off a corner kick as the ball was deflected and blocked a couple times before Dillon scored off one of the miscues. The goal ended up being the game winning score for the Toreros.

Despite being down 1-0, the Zags kept bringing pressure with back-to-back corner kicks in the final two minutes.

Overall, Garibay made five saves on the night with three of them being in the second half. USD outshot the Zags 13-5 as Wylie Trujillo and Demitrius Kigeya both had two of those shots. Trujillo and Ljucovic accounted for both of the shots on goal for the Bulldogs.

Records: The Zags fall to 4-7 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. USD moves to 3-3-6 overall and 1-0 in the WCC.
