SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga volleyball fell to Loyola Marymount in straight sets Thursday evening at the Martin Centre.
The Bulldogs (4-16, 0-9 WCC) were led on offense by nine kills from Zoe Thiros and six more from freshman Autumn Larson, ahead of five Zags who finished with multiple. Alisa Kim (6 digs, one assist) and Keau Kamake'eaina (21 assists, 5 digs) led the Zags in assists and digs, with Kelsie White supplying a pair of blocks.
LMU couldn't find its footing until late in the first, with Larson providing a spark in her second start of the season with three kills on six attempts and Thiros adding two more. After the Lions took their biggest lead of the night on a kill from Rose Booth that made it 18-15, the Zags got within one on a pair of LMU errors but couldn't get any closer. Coming out of a timeout, LMU scored the next four points, capped off by a service ace that made it 22-17, and finished the set with three of the next four to take a 1-0 advantage.
The Lions maintained pressure in the second, turning a 4-4 tie into a runaway set after a 6-0 run that saw a pair of LMU kills and another service ace. Four different Zags recorded at least one kill in the set and a late 5-0 run, but GU finished 10-25 on sideouts and couldn't fully regain control en route to a 25-19 set loss. LMU followed up with 18 more kills and a game-high .424 percentage in a decisive set three to secure the sweep by a 25-17 score.
The Zags return to action at home on Saturday for a rematch with No. 20 Pepperdine at 12 p.m. The Zags fell 3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 23-25) to the Waves at Firestone Fieldhouse on Sep. 27.
