SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's soccer team hosted No. 7 Portland in a midweek matchup and fell, 3-1, on Luger Field. This marked the second top-10 team that the Zags have taken on as they played No. 1 Washington earlier this month.
Gonzaga (4-10-1) got on the board first in the 11th minute with
Wylie Trujillo finding the back of the net after a pass from
Demitrius Kigeya. The score marks the sophomore's third goal of the season.
Portland (10-1-3) evened the game 23 seconds later with a goal from CJ Tibbling, which was assisted by Brandon Cambridge.
The game remained tied at 1-1 going into halftime, but the Pilots took the lead in the 53rd minute with an unassisted goal from Sebastian Nava.
Portland added to its lead in the 58th minute after the team was awarded a penalty kick. Brandon Cambridge scored on the opportunity to make it 3-1 in favor of the Pilots.
Overall, Portland outshot Gonzaga 16-8 with six of those being on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Johan Garibay recorded three saves on the night as Gonzaga recorded two shots on goal as well. Senior
Frankie Ljucovic led the team in shots with four, with one on goal. Senior
Devin Slingsby was the other Zag to take multiple shots as he recorded two.
The possession of the game was fairly even as GU maintained the ball for 42 percent of the game while Portland possessed the ball 58 percent of the time.
Records: The Bulldogs fall to 4-10-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference. Portland moves to 10-1-3 and 4-0 in WCC play.
