Reigning Independence League Coach of the Year
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga Baseball Head Coach Mark Machtolf announced the final addition to this year's coaching staff on Tuesday, bringing in Independence League Coach of the Year Antonio Garcia as a volunteer assistant.
"Antonio possesses an exceptional work ethic and has an outstanding baseball mind," Machtolf said. "We are excited to welcome him into the Zag Family!"
Garcia takes over the role from Sean Winston, who was promoted to assistant coach over the offseason. As head coach of the Western Nebraska Pioneers over the summer, Garcia led the squad to an ILB Championship and its second-straight Division Title to go with his COTY honors. At GU, Garcia will primarily assist with hitting as well as infielders and catchers.
Prior to GU, Garcia spent six years in Lawrence, Kan., at the University of Kansas, playing as a Jayhawk for two seasons before medically retiring. He spent the next two years as an undergraduate assistant coach for KU, staying on staff as a Graduate Assistant while earning an MA in Sports Management. At KU, Garcia worked with catchers, infielders and hitters and also assisted with camps.
The Bay Area native has spent every summer since undergrad coaching, most recently spending the past two summers in Nebraska after two years working with the Trosky organization in Yorba Linda, Calif.
The Zags' fall slate continues with an exhibition match on Friday against Okotoks Baseball Club at Avista Stadium. Admission is free to the public.
