WBB Wins Big Against Southern Utah, 91-38

Eliza Hollingsworth and McKayla Williams have career nights in the Kennel

SPOKANE, Wash. – In their second-straight game at home, the Gonzaga women's basketball team had an impressive, 91-38, win over Southern Utah University. The 53-point win is the second-highest margin of victory in head coach Lisa Fortier's tenure. 

McKayla Williams and Eliza Hollingsworth both had career-highs in scoring, finishing with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Three other Zags finished with double digits, including Yvonne Ejim with 16, Brynna Maxwell with 13, and Kayleigh Truong with 11. Payton Muma also shined off of the bench, finishing with a career-high six points and three steals in just over 12 minutes of play.
 
In the first quarter, the Zags jumped to an early 31-8 lead, fueled by a 15-4 run in the last five minutes of action. The excellent start was led by Hollingsworth's 10 points, along with Kayleigh and Kaylynne Truong's combined six assists in the first frame.
 
The opening quarter saw the Zags shoot 57.1 percent from the field and exactly 50 percent from three. The Bulldogs held Southern Utah to only 28.6 percent from the field as the Thunderbirds missed every three-point shot attempted in the first ten minutes of play.
 
Gonzaga maintained their dominance as the second quarter began, increasing their lead to 36 points by halftime. Holding the Thunderbirds to only 7 points in the half, Williams and Ejim combined for 15 second-quarter points. Through the first six minutes of the half, Gonzaga went on an impressive 16-4 run, fueled by forcing three turnovers from SUU.
 
At the half, Gonzaga led 52-15, led by shooting 53.8 percent from the field and from 50 percent from the three. Ejim led the Zags in scoring at the break with 13, and Kayleigh Truong added 5 assists in the half. The 37-point halftime lead ties the largest halftime lead of coach Fortier's career, set against Pacific last season.
 
Hollingsworth added 7 more points in the third quarter, shooting a perfect 100 percent from the free throw and field in the quarter. The third quarter also saw the Zags outscore Southern Utah 20-15, with a 16-4 run towards the end of the frame. 
 
The final quarter of action saw Gonzaga hold the Thunderbirds to only 8 points for the second time in the game. Entering the quarter up 72-30, the Zags kept Southern Utah scoreless for the final 2:30 of the game. Muma led the Zags in scoring in the final quarter with 6 points, and also added 2 steals. On the defensive end, the Thunderbirds were kept scoreless from three and committed 6 turnovers in the fourth quarter.
 
Overall, the Zags shot 48.5 percent from the field, and over 50 percent from three in their 53-point victory. Gonzaga outrebounded SUU 45-34 and recorded 22 assists. The Bulldogs also scored 31 points on 24 turnovers and had 16 second-chance points. The Zags also tallied 36 points in the paint and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds. 
 
Record: With tonight's victory, the Gonzaga women's basketball team improves to 2-0 this season. For Southern Utah, their record falls to 2-1 on the year. Historically, the Zags are now 3-1 against Southern Utah, with the only loss coming in the 1989-1990 season.
 
Up next: The Zags have a quick turnaround, as they travel to Laramie to face the University of Wyoming on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. After facing Wyoming, the Bulldogs will travel to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, where they will face No. 7 Louisville on Nov. 19 at 4:30 p.m.
