GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The Gonzaga men's golf team kicked off their first of four tournaments of the spring at the Loyola Intercollegiate, hosted by Loyola Maryland. The three-day tournament is being played at Palm Valley Golf Club and features 110 individual golfers from 18 different schools.
Gonzaga is tied for 13th after Sunday's opening round, shooting six-over (294) as a team. They combined for 64 holes of par-or-better scores.
The Bulldogs were led by Charlie Magruder and Zach Stocker, who each shot even-par (72) in their first rounds of the spring. Stocker, a Spokane native, hovered around even-par throughout his round, finishing with 12 pars and three birdies. Magruder, one of two Zag seniors, shot two-under in his last 10 holes, making four of his six birdies of the round during that stretch. They are both in a tie for 34th heading into Round 2 on Monday.
Sophomores Andrew Reinhardt and Jace Minni are in a tie for 73rd after they each turned in scores of three-over (75). Reinhardt got off to a hot start, making three birdies in his first seven holes, however a stretch of holes in his last nine proved to be a challenge. Minni finished strong in final nine holes, shooting even-par with seven pars and one birdie. Matthew Ruel is in a tie for 86th after shooting four-over (76) on Sunday.
There is a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard after the first round. Utah Valley's Kai Iguchi, Middle Tennessee State's Kevin Jegers and Seton Hall's Angus O'Brien each shot six-under (66). Utah Valley sits atop the team leaderboard, combing to shoot 14-under (275) in Round 1. Their 28 total birdies lead all other teams.
