SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's tennis team lost a close match today against Washington State University.
Today's match began with a close doubles competition, as Washington State's Elyse Tse and Savanna Ly-Nguyen earned the 6-2 victory over Gonzaga's Frederikke Svarre and Jenna Sloan on court three. The Zags tied the doubles competition, as Tiegan Aitken and Kianna Oda defeated Washington State's Yang Lee and Fifa Kumhom 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. On court one, Washington State's Michaela Bayerlova and Maxine Murphy clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Gonzaga's Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska.
As the match moved to the singles competition, Washington State expanded their team lead as Ly-Nguyen earned a 6-1, 6-1 court two victory over Sosnowska. Gonzaga earned their first team point of the match when Aitken defeated Lee 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot. Gonzaga's Caroline Wernli tied the match after battling back from losing her first set 1-6; winning the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 to get the victory over Tse on court six.
With the match now tied 2-2, the close nature of today's competition continued as Gonzaga battled for the win. Washington State broke the tie as Murphy earned a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Sloan in the No. 3 spot. On court four, Kumhom clinched the match for Washington State with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Oda. The match concluded after Bayerlova defeated Broerman 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 on court one.
Up next: The Gonzaga women's tennis team have an away match next against Boise State, which will be played on Sunday, March 20th at 10 a.m. The team returns home on Friday, March 25th, as they face BYU at the Stevens Center at noon.
