Drew Timme and
Chet Holmgren were named to the 2022 John R. Wooden All-American Team Wednesday, with Timme tabbed as a finalist for the Wooden Player of the Year Award.
Timme was named to the Wooden All-American Team last season. Gonzaga was the only program to have multiple student-athletes on this season's team.
The Wooden Award All American Team is comprised of 10 student-athletes who were the top vote-getters in the quest to earn college basketball's most prestigious honor. The 10-player team, alphabetically, consists of: Ochai Agbaji (Kansas), Kofi Cockburn (Illinois), Johnny Davis (Wisconsin), Holmgren (Gonzaga), Jaden Ivey (Purdue), Bennedict Mathurin (Arizona), Keegan Murray (Iowa), Jabari Smith (Auburn), Timme (Gonzaga), and Oscar Tshiebwe (Kentucky). The five finalists for the 2022 John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy's Men's Player of the Year are: Agbaji, Davis, Murray, Timme, and Tshiebwe. All five players have been invited to Los Angeles for the 46th annual presentation of the John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy's Gala.
Voting took place from March 14-21. As insisted upon by Coach Wooden at the Award's creation 45 years ago, all players were certified by their universities as meeting or exceeding the criteria of the John R. Wooden Award. The 46th annual John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy's Men's Player of the Year will be announced on April 5 on SportsCenter on ESPN. The John R. Wooden Award Presented by Wendy's Gala will honor the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winners and will include the presentation of the Wooden Award All American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, this year given to Rick Byrd. The Gala will take place at the Los Angeles Athletic Club on Friday, April 8.
Timme and Holmgren were named Second Team All-American by Sporting News and the Associated Press. Timme was Second Team All-American by the NABC and USBWA, while Holgmren was third team by those outlets.
Holmgren was named a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year after he tied the program record and West Coast Conference record for most blocks in a single season at 117. Former Zag Brandon Clarke also blocked 117 shots in the 2018-19 season. Holmgren is fourth in the nation with 117 blocks and fourth averaging 3.66 blocks per game. He also tied the West Coast Conference record averaging 3.7 blocks per league game, matching Hondre Brewer's mark in 2002. Holmgren ranks sixth for most blocks in a career in program history. The Minneapolis native had more blocks (117) than missed shots from the field (110) this season. Holmgren led the conference grabbing 9.9 rebounds per game, which was 18th in the country. He was eighth in the nation pulling down 8.12 defensive boards per outing. Holmgren was 10th in the WCC averaging 14.1 points per game. He was 12th in the country shooting 60.7 percent from the field, which led the WCC. The freshman was second in the nation making 73.7 percent inside-the-arc. Holmgren was named the WCC Newcomer and Defensive Player of the Year and is a finalist for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.
Timme, a Preseason All-American and the 2022 West Coast Conference Player of the Year was named First Team All-Conference the last two seasons, after being named All-Freshman in 2019-20. He topped the West Coast Conference averaging 18.4 points per game and was first scoring 18.5 points per WCC outing. The junior was third in the conference shooting 58.6 percent from the field, which ranks 20th in the nation. He was sixth in the WCC grabbing 6.8 rebounds per game, and eighth blocking 0.78 shots per game. Timme won the Karl Malone Award last season and is a finalist for this season's Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award. He boasts a record of 86-7 (.925) in his Gonzaga appearances, going 43-2 (.956) in conference play.
Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award Program hosts the most prestigious honors in college basketball recognizing the Wooden Award Most Outstanding Player for men and women, the Wooden Award All American Teams for men and women and the annual selection of the Wooden Award Legends of Coaching recipient. Honorees have proven to their university that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the John R. Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden and the Wooden Award Steering Committee, including making progress towards graduation and maintaining at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Previous winners include Larry Bird ('79), Michael Jordan ('84), Tim Duncan ('97), Kevin Durant ('07), and last year's recipient, Luka Garza of Iowa.
