Men's Golf Places Fifth in Santa Barbara

Minni tied for 11th on leaderboard

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Gonzaga men's golf wrapped up their final tournament of the spring season before heading off to the West Coast Conference Championships. At the UC Santa Barbara Invitational, the Bulldogs took fifth place after combining to shoot 14-over (590). Due to high winds on Monday afternoon, the second round was canceled, limiting the event to two rounds of play, with the final round concluding on Tuesday. The Zags led the 14-team field in made pars, tallying 112 over the two rounds and adding 23 birdies.

After shooting even-par (72) in his opening round, Jace Minni turned in 16 pars on Tuesday while shooting two-over (74) to finish in a tie for 11th place with a combined score of two-over (146). His 25 tournament pars were tied for second-most on the 84-player leaderboard and one shy of the tournament lead.

Zach Stocker matched Minni's Round 1 score, shooting even-par (72). In the final round, Stocker shot three-over (75) to finish in a tie for 17th at three-over (147). After a tough stretch of holes midway through the second round, the Spokane native shot one-under in his last seven holes including six pars and one of his three birdies on the day. He would combine for 26 holes of par-or-better scores for the tournament.

Holden Backes finished in a tie for 29th at five-over (149), shooting one-over (73) in Round 1 and four-over (76) in Round 2. In his final eight holes, Backes was bogey-free, making seven pars and one birdie. He finished with 24 pars, the third-most amongst the individual golfers.

Charlie Magruder made the biggest jump for Gonzaga, rising 18 spots in the second round to finish in a tie for 52nd at nine-over (153). After shooting ten-over (82) on Monday, Magruder returned to the course on Tuesday, shooting one-under (71) and accumulating 13 pars and three birdies along the way. He would finish with 23 total pars and four birdies for the event.

Matthew Ruel shot five-over (77) in both rounds and finished in a tie for 56th at ten-over (154). He accumulated 22 pars and four birdies, rounding out Gonzaga's tournament-best 112 pars.

Grand Canyon's Matteo Cristoni rode the round's best score of seven-under (65) on Tuesday to win the individual title at five-under par (139), edging Sacramento State's Ethan Davidson and CSU Northridge's Eirik Thomassen by a single stroke (-4, 140). CSU Northridge and Grand Canyon each took home a share of the team title, combining to shoot even-par (576) for the tournament.

Gonzaga is off for two weeks before heading to Henderson, Nevada for the West Coast Conference Championships. The three-day event will be played at Reflection Bay Golf Club on April 28-30. Live scoring will be available at GoZags.com.
