MTEN: #63 Zags Advance in the WCC Tournament, Defeat Santa Clara 4-2

The Zags take on No. 1 seeded San Diego tomorrow at 10 a.m.

OJAI, Calif. – Earlier today, the Gonzaga men's tennis team earned a 4-2 victory over Santa Clara in the Opening Round of the WCC Men's Tennis Championships. For the first time since the 2014-15 season, the Zags will be moving to the Semifinals Round to face #19 San Diego.

Starting with the doubles competition, Santa Clara got off to a hot start when Arthur Neuhaus and Mann Shah earned a 6-2 court two victory over Gonzaga's Sasha Trkulja and Matthew Hollingworth. Gonzaga tied the doubles competition when Pablo Galvan Gomez and Tom Hann defeated SCU's Guillaume Dalmasso and Santiago Hinojosa 6-3 on court one. In the No.3 spot, the doubles point was clinched for Gonzaga when Arthus De La Bassetiere and Theo McDonald claimed a 6-2 win over Santa Clara's James Bell and Nick Cmager.

Moving to the singles competition, Santa Clara earned their first team point of the event when Hinojosa defeated Hann 6-1, 6-4 on court five. Gonzaga reclaimed the lead when Hollingworth earned a decisive 6-3, 6-2 victory over Shah on court three. In the No.1 spot, Gonzaga's lead was extended when Trkulja clinched the 7-5, 6-3 win over Dalmasso.

Facing a 3-1 deficit in team points, Santa Clara was able to narrow the lead when Cmager defeated Galvan 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 on court six. However, Gonzaga clinched the victory when De La Bassetiere claimed a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win in the No.4 spot.

Andersson's court four match against Neuhaus went unfinished, as Gonzaga had already clinched the 4-2 victory.

Records: Gonzaga's record improves to 18-5 on the year with the victory. For Santa Clara, their record on the year moves to 10-12 with the loss.

Multiple Gonzaga men's tennis records were broken this season, including the best home record with a perfect 11-0. This breaks the previous best home season of 5-0 in the 2019-20 season.
 
In head coach DJ Gurule's first season at the helm, the Bulldogs also have earned a program-record 18 dual wins, which breaks the previous record of 16 from the 2018-19 season. The overall 17-5 (.783) record is also currently the best dual record in program history, ahead of the current 10-4 (.714) record set in 2019-20.
 
The Zags also set a new Gonzaga men's tennis record with 9 dual sweeps this season, doubling the previous record of 6 dual sweeps set in the 1998-99 season. Finally, the Bulldogs broke the program record for the longest winning streak, which was set in the 2017-18 season, by winning eight straight duals between March 8th and April 9th.
