MTEN: #63 Zags Fall to #19 San Diego 4-0 in WCC Tournament Semifinals

The match concludes the historic season for the Zags

OJAI, Calif. – The Gonzaga men's tennis team fell 4-0 to the University of San Diego earlier today in the Semifinals Round of the WCC Men's Tennis Tournament. This was the first time since the 2014-15 season that the Zags competed in Semifinals Round.

Today's match began with a competitive doubles competition, as San Diego's August Holmgren and Gui Osorio defeated Gonzaga's Sasha Trkulja and Matthew Hollingworth 6-2 on court two. In the No.3 spot, the Zags tied the doubles competition when Arthus De La Bassetiere and Theo McDonald claimed a 6-2 win over USD's Marvin Schaber and David Nordfeldt. In a back-and-forth match, San Diego clinched the doubles point when Sacchitt Sharrma and Will Davies earned a 7-6 victory over Gonzaga's Pablo Galvan Gomez and Tom Hann.

Moving to the singles competition, Sharrma helped USD expand their lead when he defeated Hollingworth 6-3, 6-1 on court three. San Diego earned another team point when Holmgren earned a 6-2, 6-2 court one victory over Trkulja. In the No.2 spot, San Diego clinched the Semifinals victory when Osorio claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Andersson.

After San Diego clinched the 4-0 victory, all other singles matches went unfinished.

Records: With the loss, the Zags' record finishes at 18-6 on the year. For San Diego, their record on the year improves to 21-3 with the victory.

As the season concludes, multiple Gonzaga men's tennis records were broken this season, including the best home record with a perfect 11-0. This breaks the previous best home season of 5-0 in the 2019-20 season.

In head coach DJ Gurule's first season at the helm, the Bulldogs also have earned a program-record 18 dual wins, which breaks the previous record of 16 from the 2018-19 season. The overall 18-6 (.750) record is also currently the best dual record in program history, ahead of the current 10-4 (.714) record set in 2019-20.

The Zags also set a new Gonzaga men's tennis record with 9 dual sweeps this season, doubling the previous record of 6 dual sweeps set in the 1998-99 season. Finally, the Bulldogs broke the program record for the longest winning streak, which was set in the 2017-18 season, by winning eight straight duals between March 8th and April 9th.
