SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga pitcher Gabriel Hughes added another honor to his collection Thursday as one of 13 players to make COSIDA's Academic All-District Team for District 8, just days after graduating from GU with an undergraduate degree in Biology.
Serving as GU's Friday night starter with a 7-1 record and 2.43 ERA over 70.1 innings of work, the 6-4 righthander finished the year with a 3.61 GPA while graduating in three years. His 108 total strikeouts and 13.82 per game rank seventh and ninth in the nation, respectively, and the Zags are 9-2 in games in which he starts on the mound. Hughes came in at No. 42 in MLB.com's 2022 Draft Prospect Rankings and No. 26 in a midseason prospect ranking by D1Baseball.com, the highest rating by an individual GU player in program history.
COSIDA's District 8 includes institutions in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai'i, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada. First‐team Academic All‐District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All‐America® ballot for national honors. First‐, second‐ and third‐team Academic All‐America® honorees will be announced in June.
Hughes is set to get the start on the mound tomorrow for the 10th-ranked Bulldogs (29-13, 15-6 WCC) as they return to action tomorrow in their final series of the season at home against Santa Clara.
