Rando Takes Home WCC Player of the Week Honors

SPOKANE, Wash. — After a weekend leading No. 10 Gonzaga to a crucial West Coast Conference series sweep of Santa Clara with two home runs and a total of seven RBI, catcher/DH Tyler Rando is the first Zag to earn UCU WCC Player of the Week honors.

#WCCSPORTS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – TYLER RANDO, SR. – GU

Rando, one of eight GU seniors honored pregame ahead of Sunday's series finale, batted .467 in three starts over the weekend, coming up big twice in pivotal moments for the Bulldogs (32-13, 18-6 WCC). On Saturday, the San Jose, Calif. native ended the longest game in Patterson Baseball Complex history with a two-run 15th-inning walkoff homer to seal the series win and followed that up with another huge two-run blast that put the finishing touches on GU's 4-1 win in the finale less than 24 hours later. He went 3-for-4 on Sunday with a pair of doubles to go with his no-doubter, totaling three of the Zags' four RBI on the day.

The honor is the first of Rando's career, and makes him the first GU position player to earn the award this season.

Also nominated: Brock Watkins, BYU; John Peck, Pepperdine; Nich Klemp, Portland

Rando and the Zags head down to Eugene, Ore. on Tuesday for their final midweek matchup of the season with Oregon (31-21, 15-12 Pac-12). The Zags fell 5-9 to the Ducks in Spokane on March 22, but have a chance to even up the season series and snag a crucial Quad 1 win ahead of next weekend's WCC finale against San Diego.
