SPOKANE, Wash. – In honor of the 50
th Anniversary of the passing of Title IX, Gonzaga Athletics will launch an eight-month initiative later this month. The campaign, which will begin on June 23, 50 years to the day after President Richard Nixon signed Title IX into effect, will focus on celebrating the stories of women's athletics at Gonzaga.
The initiative will take place across numerous platforms, including social media, video productions, feature stories and in-person and in-venue events.
"Gonzaga Athletics is proud to celebrate the rich history of our women's sports programs and those who established the foundation for the incredible achievements we continue to see," said GU Athletic Director
Chris Standiford. "This is a tremendous opportunity to share the stories of some of our outstanding past and present female student-athletes, coaches and staff members."
Title IX is a federal civil rights law in the United States of America that was passed as part (Title IX) of the Education Amendments of 1972. It prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or other education program that receives funding from the federal government.
"There are so many great stories of achievement by women who competed in a Gonzaga uniform," Gonzaga Deputy Athletic Director, Chief Operating Officer and the Senior Woman Administrator
Shannon Strahl said. "There is no doubt that each generation of these successful women working in and playing sports set the stage for the next, and it is an honor to showcase them in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the law that opened doors for women in athletics."
A digital celebration page will serve as home base for feature stories, video conversations surrounding important issues, social media posts showing the history and evolution of women's sports at Gonzaga, and information about Title IX-themed games during the 2022-23 athletic seasons.
The site will be updated through National Girls and Women in Sports Day in February, as we shine the spotlight on the influential women that helped shape Gonzaga Athletics.
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX, Zag Athletic Giving will have a comprehensive fundraising effort that will focus on celebrating and advancing our women's athletics programs.
