DENVER, Colo. – In the season opening game for the Gonzaga men's soccer team, the Zags came up short to Denver, 3-1.
The Pioneers got on the board first with a goal in the 15th minute with a score from Sam Bassett, assisted by Aidan O'Toole and Ronan Wynne.
GU responded in the 28th minute with a goal scored by
Frankie Ljucovic and assisted by
Demitrius Kigeya. Ljucovic was able to capitalize on the score after Kigeya had a shot blocked at the top of the box and Ljucovic found the back of the lower left net.
After 45 minutes, the game was tied at 1-1. The Bulldogs took five shots in the opening half and senior
Johan Garibay made three saves for the Zags.
In the second half, Denver scored their second goal in the 70th minute from O'Toole, assisted by Ian Smith. The Pioneers scored again in the 72nd minute from Smith, which was also assisted by O'Toole, putting Denver up 3-1.
Overall, GU took 10 shots on the night with
Loic Baures accounting for three of those. Garibay also recorded four saves for the Zags.
Records: The Bulldogs move to 0-1-0 on the year as Denver sits at 1-0-0. The Zags are now 4-2 overall against the Pioneers.
