PHILADELPHIA – In the first meeting between the programs, the Gonzaga women's soccer team eased to a 4-1 road victory at Temple Sunday. The Zags won their fourth straight game, including three consecutive on the road, on the cross-country trip.
The Bulldogs (5-2-2) closed their non-conference slate with four straight three-goal victories. GU had a pair of goals in each half and outshot Temple 16-6, with an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Gonzaga had an 8-0 shot advantage in the first half and opened the scoring in the ninth minute.
Giana Riley found the back of the net for the fourth time this season off an assist from
Willow Collins. Riley struck in a shot to the near post from outside the box. It was Collins' seventh career assist.
In the 20
th minute,
Maddie Kemp scored 13
th career goal and second of the season, with an assist from
Erin Healy. Kemp headed in a cross from Healy for the score.
Neither team scored again until the 81
st minute, when
Lauren Elwer kicked in a ball loose in the box for her second goal of the season.
Kate Doyle was credited with the assist.
Three minutes later, both teams exchanged a goal. Temple capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity. Roisin McGovern had her penalty kick blocked by
Lyza Bosselmann, but McGovern followed up the save and kicked in the loose ball. Doyle then completed the scoring with her first goal of the season on an unassisted shot.
Bosselmann finished the match with three saves for GU, while Kyla Burns had four for the Owls (0-5-4). McGovern took a game-high four shots, with three on frame. Kemp and Riley both took three shots for the Zags.
Gonzaga opens West Coast Conference play at San Francisco Saturday at 7 p.m. The Dons (5-2-3) are coming off a 4-0 loss at Santa Clara Thursday. The Zags match at USF will have live video and stats available on GoZags.com.
