SPOKANE, Wash. – In the first game at home this season, the Gonzaga men's soccer team defeated the Incarnate Word, 2-0.
The Zags got on the board early in the fifth minute of action.
Loic Baures crossed in a pass from a corner kick and
Angelo Calfo was able to score off a header to give Gonzaga the 1-0 lead. The goal marks Calfo's second career goal in a Gonzaga uniform and gives Baures his first assist of the season.
The goal ended up being the only score of the first half as the Cardinals outshot the Bulldogs, 9-6. Goalkeeper
Johan Garibay recorded five saves to hold IWU scoreless.
In the second half, Gonzaga's
Demitrius Kigeya dribbled the ball from beyond the box to score unassisted in the 51st minute. This marked his second goal of the season, leading the team overall so far this year.
The 2-0 lead would hold strong for the Zags as the team took 11 shots overall in the second half and held the Cardinals to only four.
Overall, Gonzaga outshot UIW 17-13 with
Leon Sitz leading the team with four shots, three of those on goal in just 44 minutes of play. The Bulldogs also had 10 of those shots be on goal and held IWU to only six on target. Baures, Kigeya and
Logan Dorsey all recorded three shots with Baures taking all of his on goal.
Garibay earned his first shutout of the season by making a season-high six saves for the team.
Records: GU improves to 1-4-0 overall and IWU falls to 0-5-0 on the season. This also marks the first time the two teams have played each other in program history.

The Bulldogs return home to host two games next week after being on the road again. GU welcomes Marist College on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., followed by a game versus UC San Diego on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
