SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga Bulldogs battled against San Francisco and came out on top, 63-52, in the Kennel on Thursday night.
Kaylynne Truong had 17 points and a career-high nine assists and
Yvonne Ejim recorded a double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Zags.
Eliza Hollingsworth also scored 13 points with eight rebounds for Gonzaga (15-2, 5-0 West Coast Conference). The game saw 10 ties and five lead changes before the Zags took control in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Maxwell opened the scoring for the Zags as she recorded five points in the first quarter. Ejim was right behind her with four points as GU trailed USF, 14-11. The Dons shot 42.9 percent while the Zags shot 38.5 in the opening quarter.
Gonzaga outscored San Francisco 14-11 in the second quarter to tie the game 25-25 going into the locker rooms. Williams scored a team-high five points and Ejim grabbed five rebounds as the Zags outrebounded USF 10-6.
At the half, Gonzaga was led by Ejim's eight points and seven rebounds. As a team, GU shot at 42.3 percent and held USF to 37 percent. Gonzaga also held the slight edge in rebounding, 16-15.
The game remained close in the third quarter, but the Zags outscored the Dons 18-15 to take over. USF went on a 5-0 run to take its last lead of the game with 45 seconds left in the third quarter before Truong and Hollingsworth made back-to-back 3-pointers to put Gonzaga ahead for good.
Truong completed a three-point play with four minutes left to extend Gonzaga's lead to 54-49, and she made a layup on the Zags' next possession for a seven-point lead. Ejim added a three-pointer to cap the 8-0 run for the first double-digit lead of the game at 59-49.
Overall, Gonzaga shot 45 percent from the field and held USF to 36 percent. The Zags outrebounded the Dons, 36-28, and forced 12 turnovers.
Records: Gonzaga improves to 15-2 and 5-0 in the WCC. USF falls to 12-4 and 2-2 in the conference.
Yvonne Ejim records her second double double of the season and fourth in her career.
Brynna Maxwell scored a three-pointer today to extend her streak to all 17 games this season.
