No. 20 WBB Defeats Santa Clara, 78-61

The Zags scored six three-pointers in the first quarter alone

SPOKANE, Wash. – Yvonne Ejim recorded her second-straight double double to lead the No. 20 Gonzaga women's basketball team to a 78-61 win over Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon.
 
Four Zags scored in double figures for Gonzaga against SCU. Brynna Maxwell led the way with 17 points and Ejim scored 16 with 12 rebounds. Kaylynne Truong had 15 points as McKayla Williams also recorded 13.
 
The Zags came out hot in the first quarter and scored six three-pointers, led by Truong with nine points. Maxwell, Williams and Payton Muma also recorded threes in the first to take a 24-10 lead for the Bulldogs. As a team, the Zags went 6-for-8 from beyond the arc and didn't allow any from the Broncos.

Truong, who made three of the long shots, opened the game with a three and the Bulldogs never trailed. She had back-to-back triples to open a 15-0 run in the game.

Gonzaga closed out the second quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 41-28 lead going into halftime. Ejim and Williams both scored four and Truong dished out three assists in the second.
 
At the half, GU was shooting at 54.8 from the floor and held SCU to 46.2 percent. The Zags also recorded seven three-pointers as the team shot 53.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Zags also had a slim advantage on the boards by outrebounding the Broncos 16-14.
 
The Bulldogs outscored the Broncos 19-16 in the third quarter as Williams led the team with six points. GU also dominated the boards, 15-8, and recorded three steals. Gonzaga went 6-for-7 from the charity stripe in the frame as well.
 
The Zags closed out the game with 18 points with Ejim and Maxwell both scoring five. GU also outrebounded the Broncos 12-9 in the final quarter. From the free throw line, Gonzaga went a perfect 9-for-9 to combine for 93.8 percent in the game.
 
Overall, the Zags shot 42.2 percent and held SCU to 38.3 percent. The Bulldogs also commanded the boards by outrebounding Santa Clara, 43-30.
 
Records: Gonzaga moves to 16-2 and 6-0 in the WCC. The Bulldogs also remain a perfect 10-0 at home so far this year.
 
Brynna Maxwell scored two three-pointers today to extend her streak to all 18 games this season.
 
Yvonne Ejim recorded her second-straight double double and her fifth in her career.
