San Francisco Defeats Volleyball in Straight Sets

Zags hit the road for two in Southern California next week

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga women's volleyball fell in straight sets to San Francisco on Saturday. The Zags nearly pushed the match to a fourth set, but the Dons pulled away in the final rallies to earn the 25-16, 25-20, 25-22 victory.

THE ACTION
First Set – San Francisco, 25-16
  • As quickly as it started, San Francisco (10-13, 4-7 West Coast Conference) found themselves with a 6-0 lead. Hayden Goodman and Kennedy Muckelroy provided a trio of kills for the Dons during that stretch.
  • After a Gonzaga (3-18, 0-10 WCC) timeout, Maggie Rickert and the Zags came alive with five straight points to bring the score within one, 6-5. A 4-0 USF response extended their lead back to five.
  • Gonzaga would once again tighten the San Francisco lead to just one (13-12) after a Fallon Thompson kill and USF attack error. The score would remain that way until 16-15, when the Dons began a 9-1 run to finish the first set with a 25-16 win.
Second Set – San Francisco, 25-20
  • GU and USF traded blows early in the second as the score saw six ties at just an 8-8 tie. Similar to the first, the Dons found some momentum with a 9-2 run and 17-10 lead. Karolina Nova was the lead for the latest USF run, posting three kills during that stretch.
  • Grace Ehler, Nia Damuni, and Autumn Larson provided a spark for the Zags with consecutive kills to shrink the deficit (17-13).
  • Trailing 21-14, Rickert fueled another GU run with back-to-back kills amidst a 3-0 run. Thompson ignited another 3-0 run with a pair of kills, forcing a San Francisco timeout with GU now trailing just two (22-20).
  • Out of the timeout, USF's Lauren Perri and Muckelroy quieted the late Gonzaga run with three straight kills to secure the 25-20 set win.
Third Set – San Francisco, 25-22
  • The third set began with another back-and-forth affair, seeing eight ties by the 8-8 mark. Rickert picked up three kills and a service ace during that stretch. Juliette Russell added two, and Larson pitched in one.
  • Gonzaga took a 15-13 lead after Rickert and Thompson dropped back-to-back kills heading into the media timeout. The Zags continued to hang on to the three-point lead (18-15), until a quick 4-1 USF run knotted the score at 19.
  • Despite a final surge from the Zags which included a Russell kill and Damuni dump, the Dons once again pulled away late in the set to grab a 3-0 sweep inside the Martin Centre.
