CHENEY, Wash. – In a short trip to Cheney, the Gonzaga women's basketball team pulled out a win against Eastern Washington, 82-80.
Yvonne Ejim and
Kaylynne Truong both scored 23 points to lead the Bulldogs.
Eliza Hollingsworth (12 points) and
Brynna Maxwell (11 points) also scored double figures for GU (7-2).
Hollingsworth led the team in rebounds with 14 to record her second double double of the season. Ejim also grabbed 10 to notch her second double double this year and the 12th of her career.
In the first quarter, Gonzaga outscored the Eagles, 20-17, with a 10-point quarter from
Kaylynne Truong. The Bulldogs went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and held EWU (4-2) to a 33.3 shooting percentage.
The Zags closed out the second quarter with a 9-0 run to regain the lead going into the locker rooms, 37-35. Ejim had eight points and two rebounds to lead the Zags.
At the half, GU outrebounded the Eagles 15-14 with Hollingsworth grabbing a team-high five. Both Ejim and
Kaylynne Truong had double figures with 10 and 15, respectively. The Bulldogs were shooting at 51.9 percent from the floor and held EWU to 44.4 percent.
Both teams scored 22 points in the third quarter to make it 59-57 in favor of the Bulldogs. Ejim scored 13 within the frame to lead GU. The Zags outrebounded the Eags 15-4 as Ejim and Hollingsworth both grabbed five each.
The game kept close in the final quarter as both teams scored 23 points. Maxwell led the Zags with eight points with five of those coming from the charity stripe.
Kaylynne Truong was right behind her with another seven points before the Zags sealed the two-point win with two free throws from
Kaylynne Truong in the last 13 seconds.
Overall, GU outrebounded EWU, 42-25. The Zags shot at 42.9 percent from the floor as the Eagles shot at 51.9 percent. The Zags also forced 13 turnovers and scored 17 points off those miscues.
Records: Yvonne Ejim (23 pts, 10 rbs) and
Eliza Hollingsworth (10 pts, 14 rbs) both had double doubles on the night. This marked the first time two Zags reached double doubles since Dec. 30, 2020 with Jill Townsend (13 pts, 11 rbs) and Jenn Wirth (12 pts, 14 rbs) at Pepperdine.
Ejim's 23 points marked her fourth game this season with at least 20 points. She currently has scored in double digits for 13th straight games, dating back to last season.
