SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's soccer team battled Santa Clara on Saturday night but fell 3-2 at Luger Field.
Gonzaga (3-8-6, 1-4-1 WCC) got on the board first with a goal from Robbie Mora in the 11th minute. Mora dribbled the ball all over the box before finding the back of the net to put GU up 1-0.
In the 28th minute, Santa Clara (6-7-3, 4-1-1 WCC) responded with a goal from Caden Buckley and assisted by Yoni Aidlberg to tie it up 1-1.
Santa Clara was then awarded a penalty kick in the 37th minute as Jack Civitts drew a foul inside the box. Civitts scored on the opportunity to take the lead, 2-1.
At the end of the first half, SCU outshot Gonzaga 6-5, with five of those shots on goal. Wessel Sprangers made three saves in the half as the Broncos also recorded five corners compared to Gonzaga's one.
Santa Clara extended its lead to 3-1 in the 62nd minute after Adem Hamdaoua was awarded a penalty kick.
The Zags kept up the offensive pressure and found the back of the net in the 81st minute with a goal from Drew Pedersen. Stefano Campisi kicked the ball to inside the box after and Pedersen headed the goal in for GU to make it 3-2.
Despite five more shots in the second half from the Bulldogs, Santa Clara held onto its lead until time ran out.
