Gonzaga Starts Regular Season against Yale Friday

Bulldog battle set for Friday night

THE TIP OFF
- Gonzaga opens the regular season with against Yale inside the McCarthey Athletic Center Friday at 6 p.m.
- The Zags have won 17 straight regular season-openers dating back to a 73-66 loss to Saint Joseph's in the 2003 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in New York City.
- In last year's season-opener, No. 2 Gonzaga beat North Florida in Spokane, 104-63.
- GU has won 32 consecutive regular season home-openers since a 73-65 loss to Boise State on Dec. 7, 1988.
- Gonzaga has won all 17 regular season home-openers in the McCarthey Athletic Center.
- The Bulldogs have won all 24 regular season home-openers under Head Coach Mark Few.
- GU eased to a 96-58 season-opening victory over Lewis-Clark State Nov. 3. In his McCarthey Athletic Center debut, the Zags' Graham Ike led all scorers with 24 points. The Wyoming transfer made 11 of 13 from the field, while grabbing seven rebounds. Braden Huff added 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting for GU, with a game-high nine rebounds. Nolan Hickman had 11 points, while Ben Gregg chipped in 10. Ryan Nembhard finished with 10 assists to one turnover. After committing four turnovers in the first half, the Zags had two in the second half.
 
SCOUTING THE YALE BULLDOGS
- Three Bulldogs scored in double figures and 15 scored in all as Yale cruised to a 102-53 season-opening victory over Vassar Monday. Nick Townsend scored 13 points to lead the balanced attack. Bez Mbeng and John Poulakidas each added 12. The Bulldogs shot 63.5 percent (40-of-63) from the field and outrebounded Vassar 48-31. Danny Wolf grabbed 10 boards to lead the way.
- Yale has won Ivy League regular season championships in three of the last four seasons, including last season, and has four NCAA Tournament berths since 2016.
- Yale welcomes back the reigning Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year in Bez Mbeng and unanimous First Team Ivy League selection Matt Knowling.
 
UP NEXT
- Gonzaga welcomes NAIA opponent Eastern Oregon on Nov. 14 to the McCarthey Athletic Center.
- Last season, Drew Timme had 18 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes, and No. 10 Gonzaga raced past EOU 120-42 to set a program record for the largest margin of victory. It was Gonzaga's first time beating an opponent by 70-plus points. All five Gonzaga starters finished in double figures — with each playing less than 21 minutes. Rasir Bolton added 14 points, Nolan Hickman and Anton Watson each had 13 points, and Julian Strawther and Malachi Smith scored 10 apiece. GU shot 70.4% from the field (50 of 71) to narrowly miss setting another program record of 71.8% shooting against Saint Mary's in 1996.
- The programs have five regular season meetings since GU went Div. 1 in 1958-59; Gonzaga has won all five matchups and all were in Spokane.
 
SEASON-OPENING SUCCESS

NIKE N7 RETURNS
- For the fifth time, Gonzaga and Nike N7 are partnering in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.
- During the game against Yale, the Zags will wear customized turquoise uniforms created by Nike. The turquoise color is symbolic of friendship and fellowship in Native American cultures.
 
NEMBHARD NAMED TO NAISMITH WATCH LIST
- Ryan Nembhard was named to the Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy preseason watch list.
- The preseason list featured 50 players.
 
NEMBHARD NAMED TO NABC PRESEASON LIST
- Ryan Nembhard was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches preseason watch list for the 2023-24 NABC Division I Player of the Year.
- Twenty players were named to the preseason list.
- The 2024 NABC Division I Player of the Year - selected by a nationwide vote of Division I head coaches - will be announced the week of the 2024 Men's Final Four.
