No. 18 WBB Closes Out Regular Season at BYU

With a win, Zags clinches the WCC Regular Season Title outright

THE TIPOFF
- Gonzaga women's basketball closes out the regular season on Feb. 25 at BYU. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. Pacific Time.
- GU is coming off a 73-61 win over San Diego on Feb. 23 to clinch at least a share of the WCC Regular Season Title.  Brynna Maxwell and Kaylynne Truong led a balanced attack with 14 points each. Yvonne Ejim added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs and Eliza Hollingsworth scored 10.
- The Zags have three players currently averaging double digits in so far this season, including Kaylynne Truong (16.4), Yvonne Ejim (16.3), and Brynna Maxwell (14.1). Truong and Ejim are currently fifth and sixth in the WCC in scoring. Maxwell also is ninth in the conference.
- The Bulldogs are currently shooting at a program record 79.2 percent from the free throw line, which also ranks eighth in the country. Brynna Maxwell leads the team individually with 94.4 percent, which leads the conference. She currently has only missed four free throws so far this year and has made 68. 
- Brynna Maxwell has made a three-pointer in every game so far this season. Maxwell is shooting 51.2 percent from the three-point line to lead the nation. 
- As a team, the Bulldogs are shooting a school record breaking 42.6  percent from beyond the arc, which is currently leading the nation. Kaylynne Truong ranks 16th in the country with 42.7 percent. 
- Gonzaga went undefeated at home this year. GU has won the last 20-straight home games, which is the second best home winning streak in the country.
- Kaylynne Truong is currently dishing out 5.1 assists a game to rank first in the conference and 32nd in the country. Overall, she has recorded 147 assists which is good for 21st in the nation. She has also scored in double figures in 19-straight games, and 26 games total this year. Against Portland, she scored her 1,000th career point in a Gonzaga uniform. 
- The Zags are 29th in the country in field goal percentage with 45.5 percent. The mark is good for second in the WCC.
- With a win against BYU, Gonzaga would clinch the WCC Regular Season Title outright. 
- Injuries have been an issue for GU this season as Gonzaga has been without senior guard Kayleigh Truong since Nov. 21. She returned to the lineup for the first time against San Diego on Feb. 23. 
- The Bulldogs were picked to win the West Coast Conference. The Zags received nine first-place votes that and totaled 81 points in the poll. The poll is voted on by the league's 10 head coaches, and coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team. Portland received one first-place votes and was selected to finish second with 71 points, while BYU was voted to finish third with 55 points.
- Gonzaga has amassed a conference record of 257-33 (.886) during the last 17 seasons, which includes 16 West Coast Conference regular-season titles and nine WCC Tournament championships.
- Seniors Kayleigh Truong, Kaylynne Truong and junior Yvonne Ejim were named to the Preseason All-WCC Team. 
- Last season, the Zags advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth-straight year under Lisa Fortier.

THE SERIES
SERIES INFO: This will be the 37th matchup between the two programs and the Zags hold a 21-15 record over the Cougars.    
STREAK: Gonzaga - 2    
FIRST MEETING: BYU won 83-63 back in 1984 in Spokane during the Bulldog Invitational.    
LAST MEETING: Gonzaga defeated BYU, 67-58, in its WCC season opener back on Dec. 17. Kaylynne Truong scored a career-high 24 points, Brynna Maxwell added 13 points.  

SCOUTING THE COUGARS
- The Cougars are coming off a 72-59 loss to San Francisco on the hilltop last Saturday. The Dons held BYU to just 37.7 percent shooting, 27.6 percent from behind the arc and limited the WCC Player of the Week, Lauren Gustin to six shot attempts. Nani Falatea and Arielle Mackey-Williams combined for 26 points to lead the Cougars.
-BYU is 9-7 in league play and currently in fourth place, behind Gonzaga (15-1), Portland (14-2) and San Diego (10-6). The Cougars currently are one game clear of San Francisco (8-8). BYU is still in play for as high a three seed in the WCC Tournament and can do no worse than a No. 5 seed.
- Forward Lauren Gustin was named one of 10 final candidates for the 2023 Katrina McClain Award, her second-consecutive year with that honor. She leads the nation with with 16.3 rebounds per game and 440 total rebounds. She is second in the country with 24 double-doubles in 27 games. The junior from Salem, Utah has posted 20 or more rebounds seven times this year to lead the country. Gustin was also named to the Naismith College Women's Defensive Player of the Year Award watch list.
